Welcome to The Center for African American History, Art and Culture website, where you can experience Aiken's past and Aiken's future.

The Center will offer:

  • An educational resource focused on a largely unknown part of our local history and culture
  • A major opportunity for tourism as a stop on the SC National Heritage Corridor
  • A vehicle to showcase and enhance Aiken African American population’s involvement in the arts
  • A forum for celebrating both Aiken’s diversity and its sense of community

The Vision:

  • To preserve and restore the historic Immanuel Institute building
  • To create a nexus of art, history and culture
  • To chronicle important historical contributions of African Americans in Aiken County through interactive technology-based visitor attractions
  • To attract artists, artisans and performers for exhibits, demonstrations and/or workshops
  • To complement Aiken’s other great attractions
  • To create active partnerships to realize mutual benefits of collaboration with local schools, universities and distance learning centers
  • To create a bridge to help future generations grow together based on a shared past and a united future
